Types of PMS
PMS can be grouped into different types by the symptoms experienced by the patient. This classification system was developed in 1980 by Dr. Guy Abraham. Dr. Abraham grouped PMS into four groups and labelled them as Type A PMS (Anxiety), Type C PMS (Craving), Type D PMS (Depression) and Type H PMS (H2O retention). You can find out what classification your PMS is using the details below.
- Type A PMS (Anxiety)
- Type A PMS is characterized by strong bouts of anxiety.
- Many Type A PMS sufferers also exhibit irritability and mood swings
- Type C PMS (Craving)
- This particular classification of PMS is identified by strong food cravings.
- Type C PMS sufferers can also have headaches and migraines, as well as fatigue
- Type D PMS (Depression)
- Those with Type D PMS will often experience deep and inconsolable depression.
- Memory loss and confusion can also accompany the feeling of isolation and depression
- Type H PMS (H2O Retention)
- Women with Type H PMS will retain much more water within their bodies than usual.
- This type of PMS can also cause weight gain, tenderness and uncomfortable bloating
Any combination of PMS symptoms can occur during any month, so in one month you could have Type A PMS followed the next month by Type H PMS.
