PMS Surgery
Some women with the most severe cases of PMS, known as premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), have had their ovaries and uterus removed surgically with an oophorectomy and hysterectomy. While these organs are functioning they produce eggs, estrogen and progesterone that can fluctuate and cause symptoms associated with PMS. However, once these organs have been removed the woman no longer has a menstrual cycle.
Treating PMDD by removing the ovaries and uterus is extremely controversial and is seldom recommended as a treatment. This procedure is only ever carried out if the woman exhibits the following:
- Her symptoms improve if subjected to drugs that induce a physical and emotional state similar to that found in menopausal women
- All other treatments have failed to help
- The patient has no plans at all for a family in the future
- Extremely profound symptoms of PMS that interupt and disrupt her life
